PRODUCTION BACKGROUND

In the Spring 2008 Mari Lehtinen came up with an idea of making a short-film that would be both entertaining and also revealing her work and hobbies. She wanted to premiere it at her doctoral party on the day she had her public defence of her doctoral thesis. This was on January 10th 2009.

Mari Lehtinen, now a Ph.D. in French language and also a 4. dan aikidoka, knew me before as I had been teaching acrobatics in her dojo. She asked whether it would be possible to make the film. After giving some thought, and getting my stunt mentor H-P Virkki (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0899393/) to direct the film, we decided to give it a try. The training took place during June and July '08. We shot the film in two days in July '08. DoP Pekka Sipilä, working for YLE and an aikido student of Mari, agreed to be the camera man and responsible for editing.

We wanted to keep the story as simple as possible. Coffee seemed to be essential resource in the French language department, therefore we used it as the starting point. The characters (Mari as herself) and the rest of the story came by itself – including the inside jokes. Though, most challenging part in the script was the dialogue…

Together with H-P we decided on the fighting styles. With Mari we wanted to show her skills in aikido and boxing. In this film her aikido skills were mainly portrayed in the hard falls she had to endure when fighting against my character. My style was a combination of acrobatics, kicks, parkour and dancing. To emphasize the difficulty of making a correct aikido fall, I had Aino Manninen (also an aikidoka) to perform a stunt for me 🙂

Although, this video was extremely fun to make it still took some amount of training and production effort to realize. Altogether it took 8 months and X amount of manhours from conception to finish. The budget was… Yes… Close to zero.
